'learning is life''

A message from Marten.

I sat the cup down and photographed it before realising was at a war memorial for both World War One and World War Two. It seemed to have a resonance about the word 'life'.

This memorial sits on a median strip on Geelong Rd near the t-juncton of Ballarat Rd.

Apparently it was made from stone from a local supplier, 'Standard Quarries', and is a remnant of a once highly notable Avenue of Honour. It is part of a memorial area, with the Footscray Memorial Gardens being across the road at the entrance to Footscray Park

here's some more info:

'This memorial is a tapering rounded corner shaft carved from freestone, set on a square basalt base in a grassed median on the service lane at the north end of the Geelong Road. Set in the concrete apron at the base are bronze plaques stating 1914-18, 1939-45. A bonze wreath is located near the top and the words `lest We Forget' incised into the stone within a vertical margin. Other rectangular concrete blocks were set in the lawn to the south of the shaft each with the names of service personnel: at least one survives nearby, dedicated with `Private C Olson, 1914-18', cast into a bronze plate. A picture from 1951 depicting the Anzac Day march, shows this shaft at the start of a long and mature avenue of Canary Island palms that extended down both side medians of Geelong Road. Presumably the name blocks were once set at the base of each palm.'

Well I am not so techno savvy, so unfolding the facebook site, following leads to my "notifications', I found Robyn's response to finding Mari's cup. How wonderful!

Never before have I been so excited and joyful whilst walking through Footscray station!! This little beauty was hiding in plain site whilst hundreds of people walked straight past it! The bottom of the escalators facing the Maribynong River. I was with my love and spotted it as we got on a crowded escalator! I was incompressible and told him to wait for me up top... I'd known about the project, so generous and thoughtful that I felt all warm and fuzzy inside.

Archival Cups

Kim Burrell is the Victoria University Archivist and she has dug deep for us to find some quotes about education and learning from the archives. So far she has found these treasures!

“The aim of the School is to educate workers for a life as well as for a living”, from FTS Prospectus 1925-1926 and quoted in Poor Man’s University: 75 years of Technical Education in Footscray, by Carolyn Rasmussen, 1989. p.56

“Don’t let your studies interfere with your education.” O.H. Bayliss, Footscray Technical School teacher in Blue & Gold [magazine of Footscray Technical School], 1954

“A technical school would ultimately benefit the rising generation by training them to become artisans instead of labourers …” from Footscray Advertiser, 30 September 1911 quoted in Poor Man’s University: 75 years of Technical Education in Footscray, by Carolyn Rasmussen, 1989. p.15

interestingly enough, Kim found out that the Footscray technical School used to have a ceramics area.

as Kim says: 

Attached are a couple of images of ‘pottery’ from the original Footscray Technical School. Unfortunately, there is very little information about the main one. It looks to me as though it is possibly 1950s and may have been taken as part of the Education Week exhibitions that they held every year throughout the 1950s and 1960s. It’s interesting that ‘pottery’ featured and was promoted in their teaching program to the same extent as traditional trade subjects such as moulding, welding, woodwork, etc. Throughout the 1950s, the Principal’s Annual reports often listed improvements to the ‘new pottery section’; for example the 1956 report under the list ‘Buildings, Grounds and Equipment’ says, “New Pottery Section which entailed a new partition wall, office, suction fan and flue for spray booth, shelving, cupboards and reconstruction of the pottery wheels”.

Message in a Cup is part of BluScray,  a program of blue-themed arts and cultural events held throughout 2016 to celebrate Victoria University’s Centenary in collaboration with Maribyrnong City Council for the Footscray University Town initiative.
