placement 3 - defiance, feminism, empathy

Here we are with the cup based on a photograph of Footscray graffiti, that Mari sent me. It spoke to her of learning and education.

here is the original photograph, courtesy of Mari:

So I wandered around Footscray till I found the place . . . . .

finding gorgeous lights . . .

bulldogs everywhere . . .

a great mural!

and then finally the right place!

and then photographed the cup in that place . .

then I left it there!

goodbye little cup!
farewell!

Message in a Cup
Messages and stories of learning in Footscray are collected and then written onto the insides of one hundred handmade blue cups. The cups are placed in Footscray during BluScray events to be found by people and taken home. The project gives voice to peoples experiences and understandings of learning and shares these ideas with others in the city of Footscray.

Message in a Cup is part of BluScray,  a program of blue-themed arts and cultural events held throughout 2016 to celebrate Victoria University’s Centenary in collaboration with Maribyrnong City Council for the Footscray University Town initiative.

placement 2 - Blue amongst the yellow

I was very drawn to this little house shaped sign and the cup was very happy to be in a restful sheltered spot.
This is  Ocore's cup.
it says:

Education can help you be more confident and to connect with every kind of person. You assume that everybody is the same. Education allows you to fix yourself.
Teach others how to grow
Education is life.

Thanks for these words of wisdom Ocore!

before being placed this cup was posed on a bin top so that you can have a read of it and see how it is decorated.

placement 1 - diversity in learning, learning in diversity - in a telephone booth!

placement 1

Oh dear,

now I know why Sayrathim Lothian likes her guerrilla kindness projects,
it was a wonderful feeling photographing the little treasures and then leaving them for others to find.

Artists often give their art up to the world, in the hope that it will survive, but for this project it was a great feeling to send them on their final journey into the outside world.

Here is our first message to the world which I thought apt to place in a little booth of messages.

having gleefully picked up my flyers and posters at metrowest

unwrapping the first cup!

trying out places to leave it
the final resting place for our first message in a cup

This project has been partly inspired by Sayrathim Lothian's work, to see more about  her guerrilla kindness projects and craftivisim follow this link:  http://sayraphimlothian.com/

bekka's cup

Bekka requested through instagram that her message be placed onto this cup.
now she can follow its progress from painting to firing to being placed in Footscray.

Find something that inspires you and learn everything you can about it,
then add your own voice to the discussion.

testing testing

testing testing!
Its all very complicated putting text onto ceramic cups, and I usually put the text on when its raw clay and then fire it, so that when I add the glaze the text doesnt run. But here we are to test this new technique of mixing the stain with the underglaze and putting it onto a bisque fired cup.
Will it work or not?
Lets see . . . .

have your message put on one of the cups!

To have your message about learning in Footscray placed on one of these cups:
 text Debbie on 0424479475,
email:
or post on the message in a cup facebook page.

more cups ready to glaze and go into second firing

More cups came out of the bisque firing and sit here in the photo ready to be glazed. I reckon they are in the kiln now as I am writing this. They will be fired up to about 1260 degrees celcius.
message in a cup, out of bisque firing and ready for glaze
aren't the blues lovely, still they are not how they will be after glazing, but they are certainly blue!

Its very exciting as these will be ready to place in Footscray soon!
