Thanks to Victoria University archivist Kim Burrell for digging this one out.

I really warm to the remembrances of the Footscray Technical School, as I went to a technical school after leaving highschool and it was such a wonderful life-changing experience. I did go to technical school to study art and how to become an artisan, its where my dabbling in clay became very much ingrained in me, and look where we are now! Sadly higher education is being more and more skewed to economic rationalisation, instead of the training of artisans.

(I am also sorry to say that there was no 'instead' of labourers, as my job as an artist is very labour intensive, but it was a wonderful sentiment)

I appreciated it as I was thinking that Gilmore College would have an interesting history, and an exciting future planned.

To whom it may concern,

I found the cup at the gates of Gilmore College for Girls…

Gilmore College is located in the heart of Footscray, is the only remaining 'all girls' government school in the Western Region. The school was originally founded in 1925 as a Footscray School of Domestic Arts in response to community demand. In order to obtain experience in actual household arrangement and duties, two members of the teaching staff lived in the flat provided in the school building. 

The girls spend half their time in library completing their academic studies (primary school level) and the other half in practical domestic arts activities. Students who completed the course were awarded the merit certificate - similar to certificates given to student who completed primary school. It should be noted, back then girls only completed primary school and government secondary schools was only for boys.

Later in 1939 it transformed to Footscray Girls Secondary School and by 1966 the school became Footscray Girls’ High School. Continuing to reflect the values of the community, the school was an educational showpiece, outdoing private schools and attracting scholars from middle class families. From the mid 60s, Footscray was characterized by the successive waves of immigration experienced by Melbourne. First with Greek, Italian and former Yugoslavian migrants, then changing during the 80s as European migrants were replaced by Vietnamese and East African immigrants. Consequently in 1990s the school changed its name and became Gilmore College for Girls. 

Recently the Victorian Government has committed $15 million for the first stage of the Footscray Learning Precinct. Gilmore College for Girls is involved in this exciting new initiative. The ambitious project will provide a long-term vision for world-class education in the inner west.
